Meet our Apprentice Joiner

To coincide with National Apprenticeship Week, 17-year-old Tiernan McNulty is in his first year of a three-year joinery apprenticeship with Cunningham Contracts Group. Working on-site has been a great experience for Tiernan so far. He says the work is challenging but rewarding, and he's already learned so much in the short time he's been on the job. Tiernan is working alongside experienced joiners who are imparting their knowledge and skills to him. He says it is a great privilege to work with people with so much experience, and he is learning something new every day. He is also grateful for the support he receives from his colleagues, who are always willing to help him when he needs it. Making the decision to pursue a career in the construction industry was an easy one for Tiernan. After completing his GCSE exams, Tiernan knew that he didn't want to continue with formal education. Instead, he was determined to get straight into the workforce, and he was grateful for the support of his parents, who encouraged him to follow his passion. Growing up, Tiernan was always fascinated by the work of his aunt and uncle, who both worked in the construction industry. He admired their hard work and dedication. These role models played a significant role in shaping Tiernan's future, and he knew that he wanted to pursue a career in the same field. One of the things Tiernan loves about the industry is the diversity of projects. Every day is different, and he never knows what he'll be working on next. There's always something new to learn and new challenges to tackle. Tiernan’s apprenticeship is a blended learning approach with four days on-site and one day of learning at Greenbank College in Newry.

Being a joiner apprentice has helped Tiernan to develop skills, become more confident in using tools and proud of the work he's producing. He says that seeing a project come together is one of the best parts of the job. It's satisfying to know that he's playing a role in building something that will be used and appreciated by others.

Tiernan is extremely grateful for the opportunity to start his apprenticeship with Cunningham Contracts Group. He is eager to develop his skills and make a valuable contribution to the company. He is confident that his apprenticeship will provide him with the foundation he needs to build a successful career in the construction industry.

Tiernan says the weather is just a minor setback; it’s like a little test to see if you're truly committed to the job. “But don't worry, Cunningham Contracts Group has your back; they’ll make sure you're equipped with all the gear you need to tackle even the harshest of elements. Whether it's rain, hail, or shine, you'll be ready for anything”!
