Cunningham were appointed by the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust to deliver the redevelopment of Bangor Community Hospital
Works involved the refurbishment and conversion of existing spaces as well as a new extension to serve as a new Emergency Department.
The new facility provides a 16-bed ward and 5-bed resuscitation wards, decontamination rooms, isolation areas, anesthetic and preparation suites with a range of ancillary accommodations including offices, meeting rooms, waiting rooms, new plant rooms, viewing room, 2 triage rooms and 3 R.A.T assessment rooms.
The works were carried out on a restricted, heavily serviced brownfield site adjacent to the existing entrance of the hospital with connection for emergency access. The construction of the facility included reinforced concrete foundations and ground floor slabs, blockwork and RC rising walls, steelwork frame, composite metal cladding and curtain wall glazing, RC and blockwork walls and partition, composite floors and stairs, glazing and doors, M&E installations, lifts and associated siteworks.
Modifications to external areas to provide a total of 96 car parking spaces, external lighting and enhancement of the original landscaped areas to the front and rear of the building, staff car parking, waste management area, modifications to existing single width roadways to provide access for public service vehicles.
Operating within a live fully functioning acute hospital site and eliminating any impact on the hospital’s activities was the key challenge on the scheme. The building services and data/telecoms systems were all interdependent with the other hospital within the northwest region (Altnagelvin and Causeway Hospitals) therefore resilience and redundancy to ensure business continuity and protection of critical systems (N+1 standard) and the integrity of the data which they store were key project constraints which was successfully delivered.
